Starting from 2019, the 14 Metropolitan Cities have initiated, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, the definition and implementation of Metropolitan Agendas for Sustainable Development (it: Agende Metropolitane per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile – AMSvS). The innovative element introduced is the establishment of a category of interventions aimed at implementing pilot actions for experimenting with innovative and integrated approaches to sustainability in urban areas. These actions target different thematic areas and can be shared and replicated. The aim is to promote integrated and multidimensional project planning, with an experimental and innovative character, to introduce methods, approaches, and fields of intervention that have not yet been explored, and that could potentially serve as models transferable to other contexts and areas of intervention.

Between November 2021 and February 2022, six thematic workshops were organized for citizen participation and social actors to collectively define strategies and actions for the Strategic Agenda. The workshops aimed to stimulate imagination through best practices that could be applied in the context of Messina, valorize existing virtuous experiences, and relate them, increase awareness of possible proactive and collaborative actions, and define project prerequisites.

The workshop “Building a network of active citizenship for sustainability” featured Selena Meli, community manager of the “Sicilia che cambia” project. It aimed to be an opportunity for meeting and exchanging ideas among active citizenship entities on sustainability issues within the Metropolitan City.

The workshop “Reforestation projects to create resilient communities and territories” hosted Guido Cencini from ZeroCO2, who discussed how reforestation is one of the most urgent and effective strategies to combat climate change. The focus was on initiatives involving institutions, associations, schools, and private citizens in reforestation actions with a significant impact on communities and territories.

The workshop “What’s the air like in the city? How to implement projects for pollution monitoring” featured Paolo Barbato from Wiseair, who described his company’s project engaged in air quality monitoring with active citizen participation.

The workshop “Less plastic in schools” hosted Elena Lucia, architect, and co-founder of the social promotion association Interazioni Urbane. It offered a reflection and discussion on possible actions to reduce single-use plastics within school buildings.

The workshop “PNRR and projection of environmental and socio-economic sustainability development” featured Marco Marcatili, economist, and development manager at Nomisma. It promoted reflection on the PNRR’s financing in terms of environmental and socio-economic sustainability. Finally, the workshop “The health status of the Strait of Messina and the lakes of Capo Peloro”, curated by the University of Messina with Prof. Nunziacarla Spanò, Dr. Serena Savoa, and Dr. Gioele Capillo, discussed activities and future prospects for the nature reserve in terms of resource redevelopment.

All workshops took place online, and recordings are available on the YouTube channel of the Metropolitan City of Messina.
